Today I wanted to focus on shading and really paying attention to how values shift across the subject. But instead of colored pencils I dug out my drawing pencils, keeping it simple and going for the monochromatic look.
I’ve always loved drawing reflective surfaces: the strong contrast between light and dark, the subtle transitions of tone, and the way those tiny shifts create the illusion of form, even when the object is essentially a single, uniform color.
This is a coloring page I created to practice colored pencil techniques, but it works just as well for drawing pencils alone. I started by printing my sketch on cardstock paper, and worked on one balloon section at a time, studying where the value changes on the reference photo.
