Gummy Bear – Color Pencil Practice

This was a good study of light and dark, and color transitions. Before starting the Gummy Bear I studied the reference photo and identified the dark areas, areas where the values shifted gradually, and the light areas.

I chose colors from my pencil swatch that will blend and transition well into each other. I chose a dark blue, purple, light pink, and white. Some areas will be a blend of two or even three colors, so I applied each layer very lightly in a hatch pattern and circular motion.

I started working on one segment at a time starting at the top, ears and head and worked my way down. Referencing the photo regularly to follow the light and dark transitions.

Once the first couple of layers of color were applied I stepped back and double checked my transitions and light and dark areas.  Then I continued applying more layers and slowly built up the depth and color intensity.

I’m still on vacation, so I only have a blending stump with me. So I blended with the stump, but I think odorless mineral spirits would have worked nicely here to achieve a smooth blend.

I used the travel sized version of my hand-drawn sketch (half a page of instead of full-sized).  The colored pencils used are Prismacolor Soft Core pencils.

The Gummy Bear sketch is from my Colored Pencil Practice Coloring Book.  Which includes 36 hand drawn sketches and reference photos.  It also includes a swatch and blending charts, and tips to get you started.
